Resilient Storage Solutions for a Post-Hurricane Home
I had the opportunity to design custom storage solutions for a couple who had recently purchased a home impacted by Hurricane Irene. The storm caused significant structural shifts, requiring reinforcements, including the installation of a large I-beam in the garage to restore stability. My role was to develop a thoughtful custom closet design and integrated home storage solutions that worked seamlessly with the newly stabilized structure. Through strategic closet space planning and custom shelving solutions, I maximized previously unused areas, creating functional, durable, and aesthetically pleasing storage systems throughout the home.
Project Goals:
- Maximize Storage Efficiency:
- Utilize the full depth of the existing closet to accommodate both wardrobes.
- Incorporate ample hanging space, shelving, and drawers to meet the couple’s storage needs.
- Enhance Functionality and Aesthetics:
- Design storage solutions that are both practical and visually appealing.
- Ensure the closets blend seamlessly with the home’s overall design and structural elements.
- Adapt to Structural Changes:
- Work within the constraints of the reinforced foundation and the large I-beam in the garage.
- Create storage solutions that enhance the home’s resilience and functionality.
- Prepare for Future Marketing:
- Develop designs that can be showcased in marketing materials, including before-and-after visuals.
- Highlight the ability to transform any space, not just traditional closets.
Design and Implementation:
- Chandelier Installation:
- Selected a chandelier as the focal point to bring sophistication and elegance to the space.
- Ensured proper support and wiring for safe and effective installation.
- Integrated Lighting:
- Incorporated lighting throughout the closet to illuminate all areas, making it easier to find items and enhancing the overall ambiance.
- Used flat crown molding to conceal wiring, providing a seamless and polished appearance.
- Custom Island:
- Designed a compact island in the center of the closet, housing a small blanket and off-season shoes.
- Built the island sturdy enough to support the weight of a full-grown adult, allowing it to double as a seating area.
- Mirror Installation:
- Included a mirror over the drawers and an additional mirror on the wall to facilitate dressing and create a sense of spaciousness.
- Floor-Mounted Units:
- Opted for floor-mounted cabinetry to provide a fully built-in look characteristic of high-end closets.
- This approach enhances durability and gives the closet a custom, tailored feel.
- Crown Molding and Finishes:
- Topped off the design with flat crown molding, adding a touch of elegance while hiding electrical components.
- Selected materials and finishes that are both attractive and long-lasting.
Challenges Addressed:
- Space Constraints:
- Maximized the limited space by carefully planning the layout to include all desired features without overcrowding.
- The small size of the closet required innovative solutions to incorporate the island and ample storage.
- Budget Management:
- Achieved a luxurious design within a reasonable budget, estimated to be under $8,000.
- Provided a cost-effective alternative to more expensive brands without compromising on quality or style.
Outcome:
The completed closet seamlessly blends luxury and functionality. The chandelier serves as a stunning focal point, while the integrated lighting and mirrors enhance both the beauty and practicality of the space. The custom island offers valuable storage and a convenient place to sit while getting dressed. By using floor-mounted units and thoughtful design details like crown molding, the closet achieves a high-end, built-in look. The project demonstrates that even with space limitations and budget considerations, it’s possible to create a sophisticated and personalized closet that meets all the client’s needs and adds a touch of elegance to their daily routine.
