Custom Closet Transformation for Maximized Organization
I recently worked with a client who had a very small closet located under the stairs leading to the attic. Space was limited, and the existing reach-in closet had significant constraints due to its size and the sloped ceiling in the bedroom. To overcome these challenges, we developed a smart custom closet design that extended beyond the traditional footprint. Through thoughtful closet space planning and custom shelving solutions, we utilized previously unused areas of the room — especially where the ceiling was lowest — to create an efficient custom storage solution. The result was a professionally installed custom home closet that transformed an underutilized space into a highly organized and functional environment.
Project Goals:
- Maximize Storage Space:
- Utilize unused bedroom areas with low ceilings for additional storage.
- Overcome the limitations of the existing small closet under the stairs.
- Provide Ultimate Organization:
- Design storage solutions where everything has a designated place.
- Customize shelving and compartments to the client’s specific needs.
- Enhance Aesthetics:
- Choose finishes that complement the existing bedroom décor.
- Create a visually appealing storage system that blends seamlessly with the room.
Design and Implementation:
- Innovative Use of Space:
- Identified areas in the bedroom with low sloped ceilings that were previously unusable.
- Designed built-in cabinetry and shelving units to fit perfectly within these spaces.
- Customized Storage Features:
- Shelving Divided into Cubbies:
- Instead of standard adjustable shelving above the drawers, we split the space horizontally and vertically to create multiple cubbies.
- Each cubby was designated for specific items—certain types of sweaters, shirts, or accessories—allowing for meticulous organization.
- Shoe Storage Wall:
- On the back wall, we installed shelves at specific heights and intervals to accommodate different types of footwear.
- Shelves were spaced to fit high heels, flats, boots, and more, ensuring that every pair had its own spot.
- Hanging Solutions:
- Incorporated double hanging rods for shorter garments like shirts and blouses.
- Included long hanging sections for dresses and coats.
- Shelving Divided into Cubbies:
- Material and Finish Selection:
- Chose a woodgrain finish that matched the bedroom floors, creating a cohesive look.
- Used high-quality materials to ensure durability and a premium feel.
Challenges Addressed:
- Spatial Constraints:
- Overcame the limitations of the small, awkward closet under the stairs.
- Effectively used the low-ceiling areas without making the space feel cramped.
- Client’s Specific Requirements:
- Catered to a client who was very particular about organization—everything needed a specific place.
- Customized every aspect of the design to meet their exacting standards.
Outcome:
The transformation provided the client with a highly organized and functional storage space that exceeded their expectations. By thinking creatively and utilizing the underused areas of the bedroom, we turned limitations into advantages. The custom cubbies and specifically spaced shoe shelves allowed the client to have a place for everything, and everything in its place. The woodgrain finish matched perfectly with the existing flooring, enhancing the room’s aesthetics. The client was thrilled with the result, appreciating both the newfound functionality and the seamless integration of the design into their bedroom.
